Retesting, Screening and monitoring
If a company chooses to adopt a drug and alcohol testing program – retesting, screening and monitoring can be incorporated as part of an employee performance improvement plan. Likewise employees returning from treatment programs and maintaining abstinence from drugs and alcohol may benefit from the fact that they are aware that a drug test could be imposed as part of their rehabilitation program and back to work care plan. The knowledge that a drug test could be on the horizon can certainly provide an extra motivating factor to help people in their early recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. It also gives the employer full rights to disciplinary proceedings to be imposed for breach of contract if a test is failed, provides a duty of care to the employee in that they may be returned to treatment and ensures the employer is fully compliant in being protected against allegations of unfair dismissal or misconduct.
There are many ways in which this service can be incorporated into a comprehensive drug and alcohol program. The most important aspect is that the usage of these methods is agreed with employees as part of workplace policy, performance improvement plans and back to work care plans.
